MEXICO CITY: A FOOD GUIDE

I love food. Dare I say, I’ve become a foodie over the years. One of my absolute favorite things to do in the world with the ones I love is to explore different restaurants, cuisines, and tastes of the various places we visit. To me, embedding myself into a city wouldn’t mean a shred of anything without deep diving into the food and drink. At my core, though, I’m a small town girl from Martinsville, Indiana and if it weren’t for my guy, my love, my boyfriend - Los Angeles native Nick LaKind - I would be missing a lot of these experiences. As an uber fan of the late Jonathan Gold, he started the food Instagram @trailofgold a few years ago. The mission was to eat at every one of Gold’s picks on his "101 Best Restaurants” in LA list. We’ve munched our way through the City of Angels and now have made it a hobby to hit some of the most outstanding restaurants in the world. As in literally Top. In. The. World. Cue the first blog post courtesy of Nick sharing about all of the marvelous tastes we discovered on our recent trip to Mexico City. Enjoy! - Catt

Hey it’s Nick. Let’s dive in. Before touching down in Mexico City, or CDMX as it’s most commonly referred to, you should know that you need to book your restaurant reservations. And you need to book a lot of them. The food scene here is unlike any in the world, from two restaurants that are within the top 13 of “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, to pastries that rival that of Paris, to your local street taco vendor - the food will absolutely blow you away! And, I highly recommend trying it all. Oh, and did I mention how affordable it all is?

Now, where to start? I think it only fitting that on the CATTWALK we start with Lardo and Rosetta, owned and operated by FEMALE chef Elena Reygadas.


Lardo

Remember when I said CDMX had pastries that rival those in France? I wasn’t kidding - the pastries here are incredible. The pastries at Lardo actually come from its sister restaurant Panaderia Rosetta, which is its own brick and mortar bakery and supplies the pastries to Lardo. We enjoyed this breakfast experience so much we ended up eating here multiple days. It’s beautiful, busy with locals and the food is simple in the best way. Order the Ocho Pastry. It’s mind blowing!


Rosetta

Rosetta is Italian with Mexican influence. This is probably the most romantic dinner in CDMX. Be sure to ask for a seat downstairs, you won’t be disappointed. The restaurant is located in a converted colonial townhouse that is best described as sort of vintage meets shabby chic situated in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods. The wine selection is abundant, the pasta is handmade, and the ambiance for your special date night is perfectly intimate. We love you Elena. Please bring those pastries to Los Angeles!


Quintonil

Quintonil is No. 11 on the “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants”. Need I say more? Let’s call this 'casual fine dining’ because it’s a coursed meal that will have you in an existential crisis it’s so good, but you can also wear shorts and a t-shirt should you feel so inclined (which btw, you shouldn’t feel so inclined).

You can order a la carte but if you can spare the time I suggest doing the tasting menu. You will need a reservation weeks, if not months, in advance. Most of the produce at Quintonil is from a garden just steps away. This is a true “farm to table” meal.


Pujol

Pujol is No. 13 on the “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.” If this feels like deja-vu, that’s because it is. Another unbelievable fine dining experience that is hard to put into words, but I lll try. If you haven’t seen Pujol’s episode on “Chef’s Table” you should make it a point to watch this episode before eating here because it just makes the experience feel that much more special. Chef Enrique Olvera has taken rustic Mexican cuisine and elevated it to a level all it’s own proving Mexican can, in fact, offer exquisite fine dining. We had the tasting menu but Pujol also has an omakase style taco tasting menu at the bar, which I REALLY want to try on our next trip.


Contramar

Contramar blew my mind! Order the Pescado a la Talla, the tuna and octopus tostadas and finish the meal with the strawberry meringue pie. If you don’t enjoy your meal here you’re probably a miserable human being and beyond my help. But seriously, the service was impeccable and the fish tasted as if it were caught only minutes before being served (which may not sound crazy until you realize the elevation in CDMX is just shy of 7,500ft.) It makes no sense that the fish is as good as it is. But I digress, I don’t need to know why or how, I’m just content knowing it is. Muchas gracias Ciudad de Mexico.
