MEGHAN KING EDMONDS - TWINNING AT LIFE WITH BRAND NEW BABIES AND A HAPPILY EVER AFTER
MEGHAN KING EDMONDS:
REAL HOUSE MOM OF OC
Meghan is one of those women who seemingly has it all. (And pretty much does.) Her genuine sunny disposition is equal to how gorgeous she is, and her appreciation of life is consistent and obvious through all that she does. A former Real Housewife of OC, this reality star and her hunky jock of a husband have just expanded their family with twin boys. I caught up with Meghan now that her babies are three-months-old to hear about the mommy juggle: her post-baby body and health, the dynamics of she and Jim’s relationship, and if she’ll return to your favorite Bravo TV franchise anytime soon.
You did it! You are now a mother of three. Congratulations on the two healthy twins. Hart and Hayes are so cute! Now that they’re three months old, what is your state of mind? How is your health? Where are you at today with your hands so full?
I feel like I’m finally out of the weeds. I have my energy back (for the most part), I’m balancing work, personal and mom life, and my babies are on a schedule. The first 8 weeks were definitely the hardest; I got mastitis twice and also got a terrible stomach bug. I lost a lot of blood when I had the twins and it took my body a while to build my iron levels back up to healthy levels and that manifests by draining all your energy - not good when you have three kids under 2 years old!
You poor thing. I’m so glad you’re better now. I read on your insta that everyone, including your baby girl Aspen, is sleeping so well. At least there’s that! What is the secret? Moms with babies everywhere need to know!
Yes! Sleep is the first key to happiness and a clear head! I sleep trained Aspen when she was 4 ½ months old and she’s been a great sleeper ever since. I attribute it to following her sleep cues and keeping her on a schedule - she always eats, naps, and goes to bed at the same times everyday. I’ve been a bit more flexible with her schedule as she gets older but for the most part every day is groundhog day! The twins were also put on a schedule of eating once every four hours when they turned 12 weeks old. By doing this they automatically started sleeping through the night! We pretty much have our morning routine down to a science but the afternoons/evenings can still be tricky with them. As long as I stick to the schedule they sleep through the night every night!
That’s incredible. What’s the most difficult thing about having twins so far?
I’d have to say it’s most difficult to feel like I’m thriving versus just surviving. Everything with twins is so task-oriented so it makes it much harder to enjoy the little moments. For instance, feedings are all about the end result whereas with one baby I felt like I could really enjoy nursing, take my time burping her and cuddling her. Whereas with the twins I can’t take time to burp one because the other one needs to also be burped or he will be uncomfortable. Things like this make it hard.
Will you be that mom dressing the boys the same or do you think they’ll go dramatically different to establish their individuality?
I definitely want to dress them the same while I can! They are so different looking that they hardly even look like brothers (let alone twins!) so I’m taking advantage of dressing them alike!
You and your hubby Jim (Edmonds, former MLB star) appear so happy and more connected than ever after expanding your family. But even at the best times, the chaos of twins can take it’s toll. What’s one thing you do that irritates him or that you know you need to work on? And vice versa?
This is a trick question because any relationship is a work in progress and I’m also going to put my foot in my mouth by calling out his shortcomings - ha! So I’ll focus on what I need to work on: being less rigid when it comes to the schedule, taking more time to recognize my husband and all of his hard work and to go out of my way to focus on little things like holding his hand and make him feel loved and appreciated in the way he deserves.
Love that. What does Jim do or say that makes you feel “seen” or “heard” or “loved” the most?
When he appreciates my hard work. It’s not easy being a working and hands-on mom but he recognizes that I am a contributor. The other day our pediatrician said to him, “Well you need a nanny because you work all the time” and my husband responded, “Yes but so does my wife.” That made me feel so appreciated and recognized.
Do you have to “schedule” sex like everything else in your life or is spontaneity the spice of life?
I don’t think I really understood how scheduled my life is until I got to this question and really pondered it! We don’t schedule any kind of nookie time but maybe we should… let me check my calendar…!
Girl, do what you gotta do! Your RHOC fans really miss seeing you on TV. Do you think you’ll return to TV at all?
I miss them too! I really enjoyed my time on RHOC but being off the show last season was the right decision, there’s no way I could’ve filmed while being pregnant with twins. I feel like LA is gently calling my name to get back into TV in some way in the future and who knows, maybe even RHOC.
What a tease! What is your idea of the perfect day with your family?
A day where everyone is stress-free in a clutter-free house! We are busting out of our house and our new home can’t be built fast enough! And all I can see is chaos until we get out of our current house. So I really just envision everyone looking at each other without anticipation of what’s going to happen next and with no cell phones or devices. This hasn’t happened yet but maybe one day!
You look insane! You always do! How do you deal with the haters, many of whom had an issue with your face after giving birth. Were you shocked with the obsession of your looks?
Thank you! And yes, it really does shock me. I gained 60 lbs - I mean my face is probably going to look a little bloated! And then when I lose the baby weight all of a sudden I’m too skinny. I’ve learned to see my “famous” self as a character and that’s allowed me to mentally compartmentalize and separate my real self from the person people think they know. Maybe this sounds convoluted and maybe it is, but it works for me. I’ve always put my true self out there for the world to see and I’m not going to please everyone but I’m also not trying to hurt anyone or become self-righteous in the process. I hope that I’m learning good lessons along the way because it’s not easy!
Your skin is always flawless. Tell us three things that keep your face looking so radiant!
Thank you! I’m a big fan of sunscreen and drinking tons of water. I like to keep it simple. Oh yeah, Botox about twice a year as long as I’m not pregnant or nursing. But crows feet are charming and laugh lines add character! There’s a balance.
I SO hear you on that. With the phrase “post-baby-body” do you feel pressure to bounce back for the public or is it more self-inflicted or neither?
Neither. During my pregnancy with Aspen I gained 37 lbs and I didn’t care. I embraced my jeans even though I went up 4 sizes. I love my body always. My twins are now 4 months old and I haven’t even worked out or dieted because I don’t want to burn too many calories and have that affect my milk production (they are exclusively given breast milk). I am 10 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight and I’ll get there but I’m in no rush. I just want to feel good and I do! But no bikinis for me, I got an umbilical hernia that needs to be repaired and I have a lot of extra skin. I’m not embarrassed by it but I don’t want to show it off either. But I also don’t care enough to get a tummy tuck.
Good for you. Such a healthy perspective. I see you work with an organization called 3 Strands Global. What is your affiliation and what can you tell us?
I went to Cambodia with 3 Strands Global to bring awareness to sex trafficking and the most highly trafficked and unregulated country in the world. 3 Strands is a way for trafficked survivors to make bracelets and income for their families while rehabilitating from their trauma and PTSD. I have been to the factories and seen the girls and women suffering and surviving. It’s devastating but not something I am willing to turn my back on. I plan to go back to Cambodia and continue to advocate for tougher laws and grassroots intervention such as education.
C: Sensational. Keep up the important work, Lady! Love you.
